The front seats are comfortable and supportive, and they have 10 inches of travel, so drivers of all sizes will fit. The interior materials look and feel like hard plastic, though.Įquinox offers plenty of space for passengers and cargo. There are some nice amenities, including ice blue ambient lighting, dual-zone automatic climate control, a hard-drive audio system, a dual-screen rear DVD entertainment system, and a power rear liftgate. Inside, the Equinox has an attractively designed interior. We found that the Equinox absorbs even sharp bumps without disrupting passenger comfort with either the standard 17-inch or available 18-inch wheels. It's not sporty, but it's on par with its main competitors, including the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4. It is more carlike than the pre-2010 models, with less lean in turns. The current Equinox handles better than its predecessor, and ride quality is quite good. The V6 does offer Flex-Fuel capability for 2011, however, if ethanol is your preferred fuel. So we recommend the standard 2.4-liter engine. The available 3.0-liter V6 is rated at 264 horsepower and 222 pound-feet of torque, but we didn't think it felt much more powerful than the four-cylinder. Lots of sound insulation makes it quieter than most four-cylinders and we think it's a capable engine. A front-wheel-drive Equinox gets an EPA-estimated 22/32 mpg City/Highway. The standard 2.4-liter four-cylinder uses direct injection for more power and better fuel economy. In short, it's a good value.Įquinox offers a choice of four-cylinder or V6 engines. And the Equinox comes with luxury and technology amenities not expected in its price class. The Equinox has pricing and features of a compact SUV, but it's a little larger, and closer in size to a midsize SUV. Some people believe the second year of production is the sweet spot because they've ironed out all the bugs but it's still new. Most likely, GM is pushing OnStar as its entry-level hands-free solution, but nearly every automaker is making Bluetooth standard these days. As a 2011 model vehicle, Bluetooth should really be standard across trim levels, yet it is unavailable on the base level and is an additional cost for the LT. That said, we can still see a few areas where the Chevy need improvement. Sadly, most of the improvements made to the Traverse since we last saw it two model years ago aren't reflected on our stripped-down rental-for example, USB connectivity on the Premium audio rig and updated OnStar functions. It should go without saying that there will probably never be a Traverse SS. However, driven like the rental car that it is, the Traverse's weight makes itself known with a 0-60 time that's best described as "eventually" and what feels like huge amounts of body movement and weight transfer that threw the standard traction control system into a tizzy. In fact, on more than one occasion we found ourselves confusing the Traverse with its smaller car-based relative, the Equinox. With its fully independent suspension, the Traverse does a good job of hiding its truck roots with a controlled ride quality not unlike that of a large (err, very large) sedan. Now, there's nothing nimble about the way the Traverse tackles corners and its turning radius is quite wide, but the term "carlike" does spring to mind from behind the wheel. However, we were surprisingly pleased with its road handling.
We were satisfied with the 4,700 pound SUV's get-up-and-go 281 horsepower seems like the right amount of grunt for this vehicle.
